Unit 9 Arizona Elk: Unit 9 is one of the premier trophy elk units in the state of Arizona if not the world. Unit 9 consistently produces Boone and Crockett and Pope and Young record book elk every year and will usually produce at least one or 2 giant bulls that score over 400 inches every single year. The Arizona Elk Outfitters LLC Team of professional Arizona elk guides has been very fortunate to have been able to produce several giant Arizona bull elk that score over 400 inches out of Arizona’s world-famous Unit 9. One of the highest-scoring Arizona elk that we have ever produced at Arizona Elk Outfitters LLC scored a whopping 445 inches Boone and Crockett (pictured above) and we harvested this magnificent Arizona bull elk in Unit 9. Unit 9 is bordered by Arizona Unit 10 to the south, the Havasupai Indian Reservation to the west, the Grand Canyon National Park to the north, and the Navajo Indian Reservation to the east. Arizona’s Unit 9 is literally surrounded by all sides by some of the greatest trophy elk producing areas in the world. There is a very good reason why just about every single one of the Arizona elk outfitters (including ourselves) that have guided an Arizona Governors Tag elk hunter has spent a considerable amount of time looking for world-class trophy bull elk in Unit 9. If you are looking to harvest a giant trophy bull elk and don’t mind waiting many years to draw a tag, Arizona unit 9 is definitely the Arizona elk unit that you want to be applying for this year.

A trophy elk hunter’s best opportunity for a high-scoring unit 9 bull elk would be by applying for and drawing either the early unit 9 archery elk hunt in the rut, the unit 9 early rifle elk hunt in the rut or the unit 9 early muzzleloader elk hunt in the rut. A lot of the trophy elk that are found in Arizona Unit 9 are going to be in a full rut during these hunts and the big bulls will be at their most visible and most vulnerable to hunting. These early-season Unit 9 rut hunts for elk should be the only Unit 9 elk hunts that you should be applying for if you are trying to harvest a world-class trophy elk in this unit. The late-season rifle elk hunts and late season archery elk hunt in Unit 9 don’t have as high of a potential for trophy elk as the early rut hunts but, you still have the slim chance of harvesting a great bull elk on these late season rifle hunts and late season archery hunts. These late-season elk hunts in Arizona unit 9 also offer the non-resident elk hunter much better tag drawing odds than the early season elk hunts in the rut.

Unit 9 can be very difficult to hunt on the late-season elk hunts due to most of this unit being very flat and totally covered in some of the thickest pinyon-juniper and ponderosa pine country in the entire state of Arizona. Arizona’s Unit 9 is not a very glassing-friendly unit which can make for some very difficult late season elk hunts here. The early season rut hunts in Unit 9 can also be a real challenge on dry years when the trophy elk that are found here are not bugling and rutting intensely. The weather and drought conditions have a major impact on Unit 9 and the quality of the trophy elk hunting in this unit can vary greatly from year to year. On a good year with good moisture Unit 9 is probably the best trophy elk hunting in the world, on a bad moisture drought year Unit 9 can also be some of the most difficult elk hunting in the entire state of Arizona.
